Opting for freeze dried food allows for up to 25 years of storage, so you don’t have to rotate it out very often at all. This eliminates the need to purchase food for storage on a regular basis and saves money.
Buy Whole Foods
Processed foods often cost more because of the processing. If you purchase staples like rice, oatmeal and grain, it will not only provide more nutrition, but offers some savings, as well.
Most stores have specific times of year when they offer items for sale. These are usually on rotation, every 3-6 months. Buy a few extras next time products you need are on sale to add to the food storage.
Preserve Your Own Food
If there’s a deal to be had on fresh peaches, that can benefit your food storage, provided you know how to preserve it. Canning, freezing and drying are all methods of adding fresh foods to your storage. In season, you should be able to buy and preserve your own fruits and vegetables for less than the commercially tinned items.
Buy Ingredients, Not Meals
While full meals are handy to have on hand, you can save more if you get the individual ingredients and create your own meals later. You’ll also have more flexibility.
Food storage doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Work slowly and with a plan and you can get everything you need for less.

Plastics have arguably become synonymous with modern day living. From plastic water bottles to plastic plates and spoons, plastic is virtually everywhere. Unfortunately, plastics contain harmful compounds such as phthalates, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and tetrafluoro-ethylene. According to the Ecology Center, some of these compounds are carcinogenic. In addition, the compounds can affect the body’s immune system and cause birth defects. In fact, a study carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found traces of BPA in almost all urine samples collected from the study’s participants. Fortunately, you can avoid these harmful compounds by using plastic free food storage container alternatives including the following three.
Glass Food Containers
Glass is a great food storage alternative that has been around for decades. Not only are they quite durable they are also more ecofriendly compared to plastic. You can easily amass a large collection of glass containers at home without spending a lot of money. For example, you can turn peanut butter, pasta sauce, pickle, or jam jars into food containers. You can also purchase glass containers from online or local retailers.
Metal Food Containers
Metal is another good alternative to plastic food containers. Some metals, such as aluminum, are lighter than glass if you desire lightweight containers. Moreover, unlike glass or plastic, metal containers will not break or crack easily if they accidentally fall.
Snack bags and Cloth Wraps
Besides metal and glass, you can use snack bags and cloth wraps to store food. It is important to note that oilcloth is not plastic free. It has some form of plastic coating to prevent liquids from leaking. Here, you should choose cloth wraps made with linen, hemp, or organic cotton, which are particularly ideal for storing dry snacks. For snack bags and cloth wraps, you can purchase handmade products from online retailers such as Etsy.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 93% of people between the ages of 6 and 85 have BPA in their urine. Adverse health effects of BPA and other chemical compounds found in plastic include liver dysfunction, hyperactivity, infertility, genetic changes, and hormonal changes. If you have been using plastic food storage containers, it is advisable to change and start using safer alternatives. This includes glass, metal, as well as snack bags and cloth wraps that will ensure that harmful chemicals do not leach into your food or water and consequently harm you.

This blog is more on practical prepping to be ready to life’s emergencies such as job loss and natural disasters. Here in the Philippines the very basic thing most people should be prepared of is to fight hunger. The very reason my country is still part of the world’s developing nations is the fact that until now we haven’t solved the problem of hunger and poverty yet. In all reality, building and rotating your food storage is a bit of a task, but it is well worth it to be prepared and have peace of mind. However, just because it is a big job doesn’t mean food storage can’t be fun. So what are some ways to make food storage more like a hobby and less like a chore? Make a Week of It
Often, many of us get a pretty good food storage going and then leave it to rot. Many times, we end up throwing away our food before we use it. One way to avoid this, and even more importantly, learn how to use the food we have obtained is to live off of it for a week. Make it a challenge. You could even have a competition with other families if you want. See if you can live off of only the items in your food storage for an entire week. This will help you find recipes to try, so you can see what works and what doesn’t. What’s more is the fact that you’ll actually learn how to use items like rice; whereas, right now you might only know it’s something on the food storage list of “must-haves” but have no idea what to do with it. So get creative and challenge yourself!
Look for Good Deals
Another good way to make food storage a bit more fun is to challenge yourself (and perhaps make it a competition once again with good friends who are doing the same thing) to find one food storage item a week (or month, depending on what you can do.) Make the challenge be to find the best deal you can, which would mean shopping around and comparing prices. By doing this, you can keep a bit more in the bank and make the food shopping a competition, even though in the end, it really is a team effort because everyone wins.
Creatively Store Your Food Storage
If you’re like many people, you simply don’t have enough space for all your food storage items. They definitely take up a lot of room quickly. A fun way to make food storage more enjoyable is to find creative places to put that food storage. Make it a family event! Many recommend putting cans underneath beds, behind couches, or even making a secret compartment on closet floors to create a sort of faux floor. Some even make coffee tables or end tables out of food storage and put a tasteful tablecloth over it. Nobody even knows the difference.
These are just a few ways to make your food storage experience a bit more enjoyable. Most importantly, choose to make it fun by getting the whole family, and perhaps a few friends, involved. As you do, you will also enjoy the fact that you are all a bit more prepared and self-reliant, and you are enjoying yourselves in the process.

As I mentioned in my 1-Month Basic Food Storage plan, my food storage stock for week 1 is consist of a 5-kilo rice and 4 canned goods. I bought all these during Metro Gaisano’s 1-Day Crazy Sale but these items were not on sale. I forgot to recheck their prices but I approximately bought them all for Php402 or $10.05.
I am currently contemplating if I’ll ask a carpenter to build me a food storage stand or if I’ll just buy a big plastic food storage container from the mall. If I’ll buy a plastic container, I won’t have any problems when moving time will come. So, I think the latter is a better choice.
Food Storage Plan Week 2
I’m not sure if I can keep up with my list for week 2 as I will start buying stuff this weekend for our Christmas dinner. I already have a dinner menu but I will modify it to make it more frugal as possible.

If your favorite tuna goes on sale, instead of buying the usual 4 cans that week, buy 12 cans. That way, you can still enjoy the 4 you’re used to eating weekly, while adding 8 to your food storage. This also ensures that your storage contains the type of tuna you like most.
3) Use Coupon Strategies
One of the best ways to stockpile your food on a budget is to have a couponing strategy. When you find coupons online or in your local newspaper or magazines for foods you usually buy, clip them. If possible, buy the maximum amount allowed for that particular coupon. By clipping coupons for your storage plan, you ensure that you save yourself a little extra cash so that you don’t have to sacrifice when it comes to buying foods you need now. Remember, every penny counts when you’re on a frugal budget.
4) Grow Your Own Foods
Growing foods is an aged-old way of saving money on groceries. You can grow a small indoor herbal garden or a larger outdoor garden. Either way, as long as you grow foods that you actually eat, you’ll save money. With indoor herbal gardens, you can grow your own thyme, basil, oregano, parsley, cilantro and many other herbs you use to add flavor to your foods. Outdoor gardens are great for growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables including potatoes, tomatoes, corn, watermelons, strawberries, cherries, grapes, lettuce, cabbage and greens. You name it, you can grow it. And, if you have a large yard, plant yourself some fruit trees to grow your own lemons, apples, oranges, avocados, peaches and plums. You’d be amazed how much money you can save by growing your own vegetables and fruits.
5) Invest in Freeze Dried Foods
If you grow your own fresh vegetables and fruits, you can easily can them to preserve their freshness for long periods of time. A great way to preserve them for years is to dehydrate of freeze dry foods. The entire process is fairly easy and inexpensive. When you’re ready to use them, all you have to do is add a little water to rehydrate them. Their flavors will be preserved, allowing them to taste the same way they did before you dehydrated them.
If you don’t have a garden of your own, another good idea for saving money with preserved food is to buy freeze dried foods. A freeze dried food item can have a shelf life that can last for many years in some cases. This is not only good for emergencies; it allows you to enjoy the foods you enjoy most for longer periods of time. In today’s economic times, saving money on food costs is very important to families living on a tight budget.

One important aspect of living frugally is to become self-reliant and be prepared for any emergencies or calamities that may happen any time. Emergencies don’t only include natural calamities like earth quakes, storms, floods, and the like. Job-loss, economic recession, becoming a victim of thieves, helping your neighbors in dire need, are also part of these emergencies. And, take note, I’m not even talking about TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) here as I don’t believe in that kind of stuff (hello NatGeo!).
My Basic One-Month Food Storage Plan
As I’m still a neophyte in this kind of prepping task, I decided to create a very basic monthly plan in stocking my food storage. Since I only go to the supermarket every week, I will buy the items that I will stock in weekly basis. I will only buy a few items so that it won’t affect my weekly budget.
1st Month (December)
Week 1 – 4 canned goods, 5-kilo rice
Week 2 – 4 packs dried goods (viand), 4 packs pasta
Week 3 – 4 canned goods, 1 dozen noodles
Week 4 – 2-kilo sugar, 2 boxes of flour, 2 bottles bothane gas
I’m not sure if I will religiously follow the items listed above but I will surely note it in my next food storage post so that I can keep track of my progress.
